This week we are getting to know Melanie Morris, MiM’s Head of Marketing Impact. She is a highly experienced marketeer who has spent her career working with a vast range of businesses – but who is she beyond MiM and marketing?

If you could be anyone who would you be?

I’d love to be a time traveller. When I’m out and about (remember those days?) usually walking by historical buildings or an ancient tree I’d love to nip back a few hundred years to see what it was like to live then. We see period dramas with eyewatering production budgets but what was the reality of day-to-day life? One of my favourite books is Perfume by Patrick Suskind. The opening pages tell the story of an 18th century Paris where “everything stank. Rich or poor, summer or winter, every person and every place, particularly Paris, smelled horrible.” Can’t imagine that was the reality of living in the times of Bridgerton! Fascinating.

You can live anywhere in the world, in any type of accommodation – where would you like to live?

Easy to answer: by the sea at Whale Beach on the north shores of Sydney, Australia. It would defo have to be a Queenslander. Single story, timber framed building, with a corrugated pitched roof that covers a veranda that wraps around the house. Sadly probably not to be – recently saw one on the market there for $4.5m! We can but dream.

If you could have any profession (other than working with MiM!) what would it be and why?

I love what I do – the older I get the more I realise how lucky I’ve been to work in Marketing. It’s the people that make the industry. I still get a kick out of seeing a complex business issue translated into a creative output. I’ve never been a definitive Left or Right brained person so Marketing suits me down to the ground and I flit between the two daily! BUT if I had to switch careers I’d love to be a Midwife. I couldn’t think of a more rewarding job. What a privilege it must be that your 9-5 is all about bringing new life into the world.

Melanie would like to travel back in time to 18th Century Paris!

What is your favourite TV show just now?

Lots … Literally this week it’s Firefly Lane and Emily in Paris. Probably not things I would have found to watch if it hadn’t been for lockdown. Old favourites that are always on catch up are Goggle Box, First Dates, Antiques Roadshow. LOVE Gameface, Motherland and Better Things. And of course the recent Netflix triumphs Bridgerton and The Queens Gambit. I will try most things once!

You’re stuck on a Desert Island! What three books would you want with you?

Tricky! I used to be an avid reader but I’m out of the habit and things are largely podcasts these days. Standout books I’d like to revisit would be:

  1. Songlines by Bruce Chatwin. All things Australian consumed my life for a while and this was a standout novel where I learnt all about the Aboriginal songlines and their role in going walkabout. I won’t put Perfume as noted above. Because by doing this piece I’ve dug it out and I’m reading it again now!
  2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt. A modern classic and real page turning thriller. A long book too which must be a plus!
  3. The Lord of the rings by JR Tolkien. The reason being that I HATE this type of fantasy film/novel but maybe given time I could focus and find out why so many people love this stuff. Apparently over 150 million copies sold so I must be missing something.
